September 12th, 2018 - Clifton Spring Country Club - Clifton Springs NY

Paul Sanders, PGA (pictured above) defeated Mike Sweazy, PGA (Wild Wood Country Club) 1 up in the final match in the 2018 WNYPGA Match Play Championship supported by The PGA Tour today at Stafford Country Club. The tournament, which included the top 16 WNYPGA Professionals, began at Clifton Springs Country Club on Monday, September 10th.  Unfortunately the weather was not condcsive to play and the first day of matches were postponed to Tuesday, September 11th.  On Tuesday Sanders, who is the teaching Professional at Ravenwood GC, played three matches and defeated Jason Piurkoski (Impact Snap), Patrick Damore (Lakewood Golf Center) and defending champion Rob Krajewski (Orchard Park CC) to solidify his spot in the final match.  The committee along with the finalists agreed to move the final match to Stafford Country Club due to aerification at Clifton Springs on Wednesday, September 12th.

Earlier in the year Paul came out victorious at Stafford Country Club in the WNYPGA Coors Section Championship so the site was very familiar to him.  Sanders continued to prove his dominance on that venue and on the WNYPGA circuit defeating a tough opponent in Mike Sweazy to win his first ever career Match Play Championship.  This is the second Major Championship victory for Paul in the 2018 season.

Congratulations to our runner-up Mike Sweazy of Wild Wood CC. Mike was the 10th seed heading into the tournament and defeated Dwayne Randall (PeekNPeak Resort) and Bobby Hogan (River Oaks GC) to give him is best Match Play finish to date.

Thank you to both Clifton Springs Country Club and Stafford Country Club for hosting the 2nd last WNYPGA Major of the Year.
